The AI that identifies species from your photos now runs on Google's latest model, Gemini 3.8 Flash. The biggest change is on the free Bronze tier: in our test, the share of photos where the top suggestion was correct rose from 44.6% to 81.5%.
The server switched on October 5, so identifications from the version of the app you have now already use the new AI. Version 1.5.0, which brings the new labels to the app's screens, will roll out as each store completes its review.
Standard and Careful identification
From 1.5.0 there are two kinds of identification: Standard and Careful. Both use the same latest AI; the difference is how long it thinks.
| Mode | Available on | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | All tiers (from Bronze) | Answers quickly. It gets most fish right |
| Careful | Silver and above (Bronze can use it once for 500 Fish Token) | Takes more time to think, so it misses less on lookalikes and poor photos, and it lowers its confidence when unsure |
The app no longer shows model names such as “Gemini 3.5 Flash” or “Gemini 2.5 Flash”. Models will keep changing, so you now choose by how the identification works rather than by a name. Your choice in Settings carries over.
What we measured
Before switching, we ran the candidate models on the same photos: 93 photos of 48 species posted in Japan to the citizen-science service iNaturalist, all research grade and under Creative Commons licences. We deliberately included lookalike pairs — red seabream and crimson seabream, yellowtail and greater amberjack, the two Japanese opaleyes, fat greenling and its cousin — and venomous fish such as pufferfish, the striped eel catfish and the mottled spinefoot. We used the app's own prompt. The chart shows the 65 catch-style photos, where the fish is held or laid down.
Accuracy on the paid tiers barely moves, but confident wrong answers — a top pick with confidence of 0.8 or more that was the wrong species — fell from 8–9 to 3–5.
This was a small test of 93 photos; running the same setup twice moved accuracy by up to three points. We will check real-world accuracy against actual catches from here. None of our users' catch photos were used in this test.
Why the free tier gets the new AI too
We kept the more accurate model for Silver and above because each identification cost more. Gemini 3.8 Flash matches the previous top model (3.5 Flash) for accuracy at about a third of the cost, and Standard mode, which thinks less, is cheaper than the model the free tier used before (2.5 Flash). That is what lets every tier use the new AI.
Google's prices are scheduled to change in January 2027, and we may adjust the setup then.
Please note
AI identification suggests candidates and can be wrong. Some fish are venomous — always check the fish itself before handling or eating it.
