gidday there 4x4xfar,,,, that little ""blue swimmer crab""" is indeed a confirmed ""stalked eyed swimmer"" and yeh,,, i have never heard of em,,let alone caught one,,,
no 2 son and i ventured out into pumicestone passage and decided to target a few flathead,,,the old freezer was bare in both households so after an early start of we set,,,, blue swimmers were about in abundance,,, only problem was there were all undersized,,, so we moved to a brand new possie and we would have pulled in about 50 of these buggers one after the other,,
all caught on rod/reel
all bucks,,,
and all about the size as in the pic,,, we would have spent 30 or so minutes in this spot and then they were gone,,, not knowing what they were,, we brought the one in the pic home to photograph and done some exploring,,,,, google produced nothing,,, so off to the university of qld website i ventured and the response blew me away,,,
they are predominately found in deeper waters and are a close relative to the blue swimmer,,, (in fact the shell is nearly identical,,, narrower fom head to tail,,, and the spikes are more predominant on each side,,,) and frequent our close neighbours around asia etc etc,,,
dpi&f confirmed there existence,, but i'm still waiting on legalities ato size and catch quantities to passify my curiousity,,,
they cook up exactly the same as a blue swimmer,,,,,,,, i can safely say that this info came from the qld uni,,, as all crabs caught on the day,,,(including the one in the pic) were returned,,,
we ventured back to the same spot a few days later,,, and nothing,,, gooooone
i couldn't believe the amount of them all crammed in one area,,,, the do migrate up and down the coast (apparently),,,, but i've never in my life seen one let alone catch em,,
makes ya wonder how many are sold as blue swimmer meat,,, eh????
