Barra Info

My life will be relocating soon to the Bundaberg region. Having never fished for barra i am seeking some specific info on them in relation to gear and lures. Can some one please advise me on a suitable spinning reel and matching rod that will handle these impounment mothers. I have in mind a Daiwa 3500hd and fishing this with 15kg braid. Try as i might can not find a suitable rod that is light enough to cast for long periods that has the required grunt to use the reel to it's capacity. Also advise on lures both deep and shallow would be appreciated

Thanks guys sveric

barra rod and reel

I am currently using Pioneer Impact rods with a Shimano Curado and Calais and 10kg braid.

The Pioneers are cheap rods but are light and have a great, strong action. I am sure they would stop all impoundment barra because I have caught black jewfish on them, which outpull barramundi.

I like cheapish rods coz I tend to tread on them, stick them in car doors, sit on them, put heavy objects on them, leave them chafing against hard objects on corrugated roads, push the boat off river banks with them, wind them down to submerged snags, drive through bushes with them in the rod holders etc so they are almost a disposable item for me.

I spend more on reels because they tend to last longer and therefore warrant a greater investment. I love the Shimano baitcasters, especially the Curado.

Just like me

Hi Matt,
I could not be more like you if i tried. If there is a way to destroy a new graphite rod i have found it already 10 times over, i never seem to learn. Bait casters are not my go, i prefer spin outfits or at least the misses does, that way she can use them too.

Thanks so much for the reply severic
